Greasy Hair: 7 Tips For Dealing With This Hair Issue

Hair can get greasy in a number of ways. Sweat after a workout can make your hair feel heavy and oily and so can going without washing your hair for a week. For some people, however, greasiness isn’t just an annoyance that shows up every now and then. It can be a permanent condition.

Some people are more prone to producing greater quantities of skin oil than others. This causes oil to collect on the hair follicle. While some oil is desirable as a way to keep hair tangle-free, an excess amount of oil is a nuisance. It can create a hair maintenance nightmare, especially if you work out daily or have other responsibilities that make it difficult to wash and dry your hair daily.

Use Apple Cider Vinegar to Combat Grease

Apple cider vinegar can help greasy hair in a number of ways. Because it has astringent qualities, apple cider vinegar helps tone down scalp oiliness. When you dilute it adequately, rinsing your hair with apple cider vinegar can help bring the right pH balance to your scalp.

To reach the perfect pH simply add three tablespoons of vinegar to warm water in a cup and spread the solution through your hair after washing and rinshing with mild shampoo. Let the vinegar soak into your hair and scalp for ten minutes. After that time has elapsed, rinse it out with cool water. If you treat your hair and scalp with apple cider vinegar three time a week, you’ll get grease-free hair in no time.

Avoid Conditioning Your Scalp

It’s very tempting to finish a shampoo and conditioning session in the shower with applying great-smelling conditioner directly to your scalp. However, it’s a very bad idea. A rule of thumb that is important to remember: shampoo is for the scalp, and conditioner is for the ends of your hair. If needed, you can start conditioning your hair halfway down the scalp, but avoid applying directly to your scalp or close to it. This helps your scalp stay grease free.

Use A Clean Brush – And Minimizing Brushing

When your scalp feels greasy, it can be tempting to take a brush to it. The problem is that brushing spreads grease from your scalp throughout your hair. Another unkown side effect is that it stimulates your scalp into producing more oil thereby increasing the grease in your hair.

Brushing can cause hair to feel greasy in another way, as well. If you use a brush that is dirty, you are effectively spreading that dirt through your hair. Old haircare product and dust can then gather in your hair and make it dull and greasy. You wouldn’t brush your teeth with an old, gunky tooth brush would you? Then don’t brush your hair with a dirty brush.

Make sure you keep brushing to a minimum so that you don’t spread grease. Also, use a clean brush every time you pass it through your locks. This helps keep greasiness to a minimum.

Use Caution With Shiny Hair Products

Hair serums and shampoos that promise shiny hair may be tempting to use. In the short-term, they offer instant, attractive shine. However, they acchieve that by depositing oil on your hair strands and scalp. If you do need to use a shine product, make sure you apply it to the middle of your hair and work it down. Never get it anywhere near your scalp.

Some Natural Ingredients Help Cut The Grease

Switching to shampoos with natural ingredients can help you control oiliness. Tea tree oil, for instance, has anti-inflammatory properties that calm down allergic reactions in your scalp thereby reducing oil production. Seaweed extract can help, as well. It is efficient at removing excess oil.

Epsom Salts Might Do The Trick

Epsom salts are a great home remedy for greasy hair. They contain magnesium salts that help reduce buildup of product in your hair as well as easing inflammation. All you need to do is to mix a tablespoon of epsom salts with your shampoo and use it twice a week when you wash your hair. This simple trick may be enough to caue a noticeable decline in your hair’s oil production.

What If These Tricks Don’t Work

If the basic approaches here don’t seem to reduce the greasiness that you feel, it’s possible that you are experiencing a scalp condition such as psoriasis or eczema. If that’s the cae, it’s time to meet with a dermatologist. Your doctor may be able to offer you hormonal treatments or help you with botox injections to reduce the production of oils on your scalp.
