If you’re looking for a beauty gift this holiday season to treat a friend or family member, the NYX Professional Makeup Plump Right Back Primer and Setting Spray Duo may be tempting. At the reasonable price point of $11, it comes in a festive gift box and brings both the serum + primer and the finishing spray. Although it does the job of setting your makeup, the promised plumpness is not immediately evident.
Start With The Primer
The first step in this duo’s application is the Plump Right Back Electrolytes Plumping Primer Serum. This electrolyte-infused clear lotion is meant to grip makeup so that wear extends throughout the day. NYX also promises an instant look of plumpness, making you look fresh and energized. Because it keeps the foundation on longer, the product’s makers also promise you’ll moisture and replenishment.
Our first thought when applying the serum was how sticky the consistency felt. Usually, primers have a silkier feel on your fingers during application. For example, the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer goes on smooth and never feels sticky. Once applied to the face, it makes the skin feel soft and smooth.
Upon application of the primer and serum, however, our skin didn’t feel sticky. The clear serum absorbed quickly and we did feel a bit of tightening. It was not an unpleasant feeling and only lasted a few seconds. The makeup application on top of the serum was smooth. The products we applied seemed to last all day.
Finish With The Spray
After applying foundation, powder, eyeshadow and blush, it was time to seal the deal with the Plump Right Back Plumping Setting Spray. This is also meant to keep your hard work in place and extend the wear of your makeup. When using this spray, theoretically you should have no smudging or transfer of makeup. It promises to keep your made-up look fresh for as many as 24 hours. It also claims to plump your skin for a more youthful glow.
Although the spray was refreshing, it took a bit of time to dry on the skin. It didn’t absorb as quickly as the serum did. In fact, we dabbed our face with a tissue to remove some of the excess spray. Perhaps if the spray bottle shot out a finer mist this wouldn’t be an issue. However, in order to cover all our makeup and therefore extend the wear, we required several spritz, which meant our face was slightly drenched.
Did Our Face Plump?
The question remains: did our tired face benefit from plumping? The answer is no. There was no noticeable difference in the plumpness in our skin. However, our makeup did stay on all day. The color on our cheeks and on our eyelids remained vibrant, and our foundation stayed put, giving us a put-together look for longer than usual.
As a primer and a setting spray, this product does hit the mark. Makeup went on smoothly and stayed looking the same throughout the day as when we first applied it in the morning. However, our skin didn’t benefit from any plumpness.
The Ingredients Behind The Plump Promise
This product duo contains five electrolytes and vitamins that are meant to hydrate your skin without leaving it oily and locking in moisture all day. These include magnesium, aloe, citric acid, zinc and biotin. As with all NYX cosmetics, these products are cruelty-free as well as vegan formulations.
The primer also includes hyaluronic acid. Because it creates a moisture barrier on your skin, the look of fine lines and wrinkles is typically diminished. This gives you a more youthful appearance and may be the science behind the plumping claims.
Should You Purchase The Product?
The positives are that it works as a primer and setting spray. The serum is absorbed quickly and helps makeup application stay in place. The spray is refreshing and locks in the product on your face.
The negatives are that the promise of plump skin was not evident. The serum feels sticky at first. Although it did have a scent that wasn’t overpowering, no scent would have been better. The spray would have benefitted from a thinner mist.
Overall, this is a solid makeup primer and setting spray at this price point. If you want to extend your makeup, this will get the job done. However, if the main purpose of purchasing this duo is to plump your skin, the results may underwhelm you.
