People love to post workout selfies on social media. In many cases, however, you’ll see the women posting these selfies have makeup on. While there is rarely a problem using a dab of product to hide a pimple, but wearing makeup when working out isn’t good for your skin. It’s easy to imagine why – it can be hard for your skin to breathe when a layer of makeup is covering it and then covered by another layer of sweat.
Sometimes It’s Hard To Go Makeup-Free
Weight-loss workout plans frequently have people squeezing in workouts wherever they can. This might mean working out during a lunch break in the middle of the work day. If you’re a woman who wears makeup to work, it could be hard to take it off, get your workout in and then reapplying your makeup all in the span of a lunch hour. However, many dermatologists recommend that people remove their makeup before they begin to sweat because wearing makeup when working out can damage your skin.
The Negatives Of Working Out With Makeup On
When you work out, your blood vessels dilate in order to allow increased blood flow to get to the skin thereby opening the pores. When you have makeup on, sweat and bacteria from within the skin are unable to exit the pores. Your pores may be at risk of clogging, and you will not dissipate heat as efficiently as you should.
Allowing sweat and bacteria to become trapped in enlarged pores can lead to blackheads. Acne and skin irritation are possibilities, as well. The difficulty that your skin has dissipating heat can cause conditions such as rosacea. Wearing makeup when working out can exacerbate these conditions.
What If You Don’t Have Time To Remove Your Makeup?
It isn’t always possible to take makeup off before you start a workout. You might find yourself rushing to a spin class after work only to make it in time to snag the last bike. If you foresee such situations, you should begin shopping for non-comedogenic makeup products that are designed to not block the pores. Oil-based liquid makeup products are unsuitable for use when you need to work out with your makeup on.
It’s also a good idea to try switching to tinted BB or CC creams, rather than using actual makeup. Tinted creams tend to be lighter formulations. They give you a glow without clogging your pores. If you have blemishes that need to be hidden, using spots of BB cream or concealer is a far better idea than using foundation.
Lipstick, Eyeliner And Mascara Are Not Great Options
It’s important to understand that it isn’t just foundation on the face that can clog your pores. Lipstick, eyeliner and mascara can smudge with sweat and get into your pores, clogging them as well. This can cause eye styes, blackheads and acne around the lips when worn during workouts.
If you’re someone that has trouble going out in public without makeup, removing it for the gym can be difficult. However, your skin will thank you for it. Try using very light, non-comodegenic makeup. Another option is developing a 10-minute makeup routine so that you can remove your makeup for a workout and then reapply it quickly after you’re done. It can be difficult to adjust your makeup routines for your workouts, but it’s something that you need to do for better skin health.
