It can feel great to get on a plane, land at your destination, and wait for the door to open, when you get to meet someone you love, or enjoy a glamorous new location. Your ability to enjoy this kind of moment, however, can be diluted by how ready you feel to face the world: exposing your skin to the low humidity of an airplane cabin for hours can dehydrate it. It can feel as if your skin is dry, oily, and puffy, all at the same time — a condition colloquially known as flight face or plane face. In other words, you can feel completely unready just when you need to be at your best.
Fortunately, there are steps you can take to prevent this effect on your skin.
Use sheet masks
A concept imported from K-beauty (or Korean beauty practices), a sheet mask is a wet tissue enriched with hydrating serums. You place the mask on your face for 15 minutes each day starting a couple of days before your flight, and even during your flight. It can give your skin a fighting chance in the dehydrating environment of the airplane cabin.
Use strong sunscreen on the flight
Even if you’re not pressing your face against the window on the plane, UV from the sun can still make its way to your skin. Ultraviolet radiation can be much stronger at high altitudes than it is on the ground. For this reason, if you’re flying during the day, it can help to put on a strong sunscreen, and also pop antioxidant supplements to help the skin fight against the damaging effects of the UV.
Use a multi-serum on the flight
Your body can lose a pint of water every 75 minutes that you’re up in the air. It’s important to keep a bottle of water with you and keep sipping. It’s also important to hydrate your skin with vitamin C and hyaluronic acid serums. These can be a powerful ally against dehydration of the skin.
Fight skin bloating
The low-pressure environment of a flight cabin stresses the body’s lymphatic system, slowing down its flow rate. This can lead to a puffiness of the skin. Massaging the skin around the collarbones can help stimulate the flow and get rid of the puffiness. You might also try a skin product that helps stimulate the lymph system.
Finally, you want to go easy on unhealthy in-flight snacks. Salt-laden foods can dehydrate you, and increase puffiness of the skin. Instead, you want to stick to water-rich salads and fruit.
Perhaps you never thought that you could do something about your flight face problem, but there are ways. Focusing on hydrating your skin can help you sidestep this beauty challenge.
